Understanding What an Impacted Tooth Really Is

Posted on 6/23/2018 by Dr. Franco
Impacted Teeth BiteLock TX 75062-5650Many people first hear the term ""impacted tooth"" in relation to their wisdom teeth. That's because wisdom teeth are the most common type of tooth to become impacted, although it does happen to other teeth.

When your wisdom teeth are impacted, they have to be surgically removed. Otherwise, they can cause a number of issues. But what does it mean when a tooth is impacted?

Impacted Tooth Defined

When your permanent teeth come in, they erupt through the gum line and grow straight upward. With your wisdom teeth, though, there's not always enough room for the tooth to do that. Instead of coming in straight, they go sidewise. The tooth, then impacts or runs into the back tooth.

Types if Impacted Teeth

There are a few different types of impacted wisdom teeth:

•  Soft impaction means that the top of the tooth has pushed through the bone, but the rest of the wisdom tooth is still under the gum.
•  Partial bony impacts occur when the more of the tooth has come up, but some is still in the jawbone.
•  Complete bony impacts happen when the entire wisdom tooth is within the jawbone.

All of these types of impacts can be very serious. They can push your other teeth out of alignment, making it difficult or even painful to eat or close your mouth. They can also leave your mouth open to infection, gum disease, and other issues. It's even possible for impacted wisdom teeth to lead to cysts or tumors.

What to Do
If you believe you have an impacted wisdom tooth, you need to call us as soon as you can to set up an appointment. Without doing X-rays, it can be impossible to tell what type of impacted teeth you have or what types of issues they're causing. Don't hesitate-the longer these impacted teeth are there, the worse the situation can become.
