How Does Implant Rejection Present Itself?

Posted on 9/15/2018 by Dr. Franco
How Does Implant Rejection Present Itself? The good news is that implant rejection is extremely rare and implant surgery enjoys a high success rate, making it one of the most predictable operations in the industry.

This success is due, in significant part, to the new advancements in technology and the quality of materials used. However, in some cases, implant rejection happens.

What Causes Implant Rejection?

While you will probably enjoy a successful implant surgery, some things could result in a rejection.

•  Body rejection of a foreign substance
•  Allergy to the metals in the implant
•  Improper oral health care at home
•  Smoking
•  Older implants placed with inadequate technology
•  Poor dental hygiene
•  An infection around the implant

Signs of Implant Rejection

Even if the success rate of implant surgery is high, there is always a possibility that an implant rejection could fail. This is what you should watch out for:

•  Swelling around the implant area
•  Redness
•  Pain when biting or chewing
•  Difficulty chewing
•  Loose implants
•  Infection
•  Fever

These are the most common problems that could indicate a failure following dental implant surgery. The success rate of implant surgery is up to 98-percent. Our team of surgeons has extensive experience in this procedure, but, as with any surgery, there is a risk of an allergic reaction or another reason for failure. It is important you let us know right away if you have any problems with your implants.

Before the surgery, we will give you all the information you need to care for your implants, so you don't suffer any setbacks in your recovery. We will also ask you detailed questions about your prior experiences with medicines and metals to avoid using materials that could cause an implant rejection.

If you have any concerns following your implant surgery or have implants that are causing you problems, please don't hesitate to call us and we will make an appointment to see you.
