Can I replace my dentures with dental implants?

Posted on 8/10/2013 by Dr. Franco
Illustration of replacing dentures with implants in Irving,TXStandard dentures have many disadvantages. They lose their fit over time, and they can have an unnatural, uncomfortable feel. Patients also get fed up with the ill-tasting dental adhesives that are needed for dentures and the dietary limitations.

Patients who are dissatisfied with their existing dentures can upgrade to dental implants for a more durable, attractive solution.

Dental implants can support a prosthetic arch, securing it to the underlying jawbone, which also is stabilized by the implants. Structurally, a dental implant replicates an absent tooth’s root. The root serves the important function of preventing jawbone erosion. With conventional dentures, that root structure is still absent, which allows jawbone erosion to progress, causing a decreased fit in the denture as the jaw’s shape evolves.

It does not take many dental implants to secure a denture, either. With a technique known as Teeth In A Day, just four dental implants can hold the prosthetic in place. The four implants are placed toward the front of the jaw to take advantage of maximum available bone, even in long-term denture wearers who have already experienced bone loss.

The jawbone erodes more quickly at the rear of the jaw, where the bone is thinner. Therefore, the front of the jaw has the most available bone to support dental implant osseointegration.

Teeth In A Day gives patients all of the benefits of dental implants. The shape of the jaw won’t change over time, so the denture keeps its fit. An implant-supported denture also is more effective at chewing so patients can maintain a varied diet.

The procedure is completed in a single session lasting just a few hours. The surgery is performed in the dental office, and patients often choose some form of sedation for a smoother experience. The patient can leave the office with a prosthetic arch in place, which is why this procedure is often referred to as “Smile in a Day.”

You can get better outcomes from your dentures if you turn to dental implants. Talk to our dental implant team today to learn if this technique will benefit you.
