Improve Your Chances of a Successful Dental Implant Recovery

Posted on 7/15/2013 by Dr. Franco
Tooth brush to improve dental implant recovery in Irving,TXThe process of dental implant surgery involves an implant dentist using small titanium pillars and porcelain crowns to recreate the functionality of a natural tooth. Treatment involves the dentist placing the titanium supports directly into the gum tissue, where over a period of time it will bond with the underlying jaw bone to provide strength and stability to the implant itself, and also support neighboring teeth to help maintain the patient’s bite.

Following implant surgery, patients will undergo a period of healing. To improve the chances of successful recovery from dental implant treatment, it is important to make some lifestyle changes as advised by the dentist, as recovery times can be influenced by the way in which the patient cares for the implants after the procedure.

Smokers, for example, should avoid smoking during the recovery process as nicotine causes a decrease in blood flow, which in turn can hamper and delay the healing process. In some cases, smoking after dental implant treatment can cause failure of treatment altogether, so it is a wise choice to avoid the use of tobacco.

Poor dental hygiene following treatment can also reduce the chances of successful recovery. A lack of dental care can cause bacteria to flourish and cause gums to become sore and inflamed, which in turn could lead to an increased risk of failure. While gentler brushing may initially be required in the first few days following treatment, maintaining a good oral hygiene program, including flossing and the use of a anti-bacterial mouthwash, can help maximize the chances of success.

Also, care should be taken when eating, as eating harder foods before the implants have had a chance to successfully bond with the jaw bone can cause the implants to shift position, and could cause the bonding process to fail, or the implant to bond in the incorrect position. Eating softer foods can help to reduce the risk of the implant shifting position.

Ultimately, the chances of success of dental implants rest with the patient following good dental practices in the initial days and weeks following treatment. Regular dental checkups to evaluate the progress of the healing process are advised in order to identify problems are recommended, and the implant dentist will also work with the patient to advise on likely factors that may affect the chances of successful dental implant treatment.
