Will I need a dental implant if I have a cracked tooth?

Cracked teeth can cause considerable pain, and can also provide an inlet for bacteria to gain access to and attack the internal machinations of the tooth. In time, this could result in total loss of the damaged tooth, with tooth replacement techniques such as dental implants being required.

A cracked tooth might not even be noticeable to the sufferer, as not all cracks are visible on the surface of the tooth, but occur inside the tooth, and require diagnosis by an implant dentist should the patient experience any untoward pain with their teeth.

Most cracks occur on the lower molars, as these teeth are responsible for chewing, but cracks can affect any tooth. However, contrary to what people may think, not every crack in a tooth requires that the tooth be extracted, and the treatment required will vary according to the type severity of the crack.

Craze lines, for example, are small cracks which form on the surface of the tooth enamel and occur naturally in adult teeth. They cause little pain and require no treatment. In contrast, a fully-cracked tooth will likely have cracks running end to end, and often will affect the tooth’s roots. A fully-cracked tooth may require root canal treatment, especially if the tooth’s roots and pulp become aggravated or damaged as a result of the initial crack.

A root canal can often save a damaged or cracked tooth, providing it is treated early; otherwise, the preferred course of action for an implant dentist is to extract the broken tooth and replace it with a dental implant.

Dental implants are a popular and successful method of replacing lost teeth, affording the mouth all the strength and support of a normal, healthy tooth. Dental implants also help stimulate and encourage bone growth, helping to keep the surrounding teeth secure and healthy.

Cracked teeth can present a sufferer with many problems if left untreated. Often the sufferer won’t realize they have cracked teeth at all, and so if any unexplained, sudden pain is experienced, its worthwhile having a consultation with a dentist who can check for the presence of cracked teeth as a possible cause.
