![]() The concept of a dental implant may seem like a relatively new one in the field of dental health, but it’s actually thousands of years old. Archaeologists have found that ancient Egyptians embedded various materials into the jawbone to serve as a false tooth, including bone, rocks, seashells, and pieces of gold (shells were probably the most effective because of their calcium carbonate content). Archaeological expeditions also uncovered a wrought iron dental implant in the jaw of a Gallo-Roman in France, dating back to the 2nd century A.D. However, true modern dental implants were not developed until the 1950’s. In 1952, Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark of Sweden discovered that his bone-anchored titanium research microscopes had fused to bone tissue and could not be removed. Dr. Branemark replicated these results under controlled research conditions, revolutionizing accepted ideas about proper implant materials and leading to the first implantation of titanium dental implants in a patient in 1965. Branemark’s implants are still one of the most oft-used systems in modern implant dentistry. Researchers are continuing to develop new materials and different styles of implants, with each one being designed to replace the lost teeth of patients and help restore their confidence. If you are considering dental implants as an option for replacing lost teeth in the Las Colinas area, schedule a consultation with our experienced implant dentist today. He will help determine if you are a good candidate for implants, and will help you select the most appropriate implants for your situation. Click an icon below to share our blog. Back to Blog Home |
