Proper Care for Dental Implants

Posted on 6/21/2011 by Dr. Franco
Woman flossing her dental implant in Irving,TXDental implants provide a permanent replacement for teeth that have been lost due to decay, injury or other problems. As with your natural teeth, the long-term endurance of implants depends upon how well you take care of them. With proper care, implants can last many years, ensuring that you will maintain your smile.

Everyday Oral Hygiene for Dental Implants

Everyday care for your new implants is not significantly different from everyday care for your natural teeth. Implants must be brushed and flossed at least daily. Your implant dentist might recommend an irrigation device to help clear debris from the mouth and keep your gums healthy. It is important to ensure the health of your gums, since the gums help support the implants, so be sure to follow any and all instructions your implant dentist offers regarding everyday care and hygiene.

It is also important to continue visiting your dentist regularly. The dentist will continue monitoring your implants as well as any remaining teeth, and will also monitor the health of your gums and jawbones. Routine dental care also includes cancer screenings and evaluation of other soft tissues in your mouth.

Additional Care

Your implant dentist might recommend other follow up care to ensure your implants remain properly situated and that the bone surrounding the implants remains strong. This care will include appointments after your implant surgery to be sure healing has progressed as expected. The dentist will also continue to take regular X-rays.

If you show signs of gum disease, your dentist will also recommend additional care to bring your gums back to health. This care will not only help your implants remain strong, but will also protect the rest of your teeth and prevent infection from spreading to other areas of your body.

If you have any issues with your implants or questions about how to care for them properly, be sure to consult with our Irving dental implants dentist. We would be happy to schedule an appointment or a consultation regarding your candidacy for dental implants.
