Why Denture Wearers are Turning to Dental Implants

Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental implants offer several advantages over traditional dentures. These include:

•  Implants are permanent
•  Implants do not move in the mouth
•  Implants help stimulate bone growth in the jaw
•  Implants do not have to be removed for cleaning

Dentures are bulky, and require an adjustment period until you get used to having them in your mouth. Once implants are placed, they feel and function just like your natural teeth. Cleaning implants is much the same as cleaning your natural teeth. They do not have to be taken out to be cleaned, nor do you have to use special adhesives to keep them in place.

Long-term denture wear can also lead to bone loss in your jaws. Under normal circumstances, chewing affects the tooth roots in such a way that they stimulate bone tissue to continue to regenerate. Because dentures sit on the gum tissue, they do not stimulate the bone during chewing. Unlike dentures, dental implants supply a replacement root that keeps the jawbone strong and healthy.

The Implant Procedure

Implants are typically placed in a two-part procedure. First, the root portion of the implant, which is made of titanium, is placed in the jawbone. The root must be given some time to heal so that it can bond with the jawbone. This typically takes a few weeks.

After the implants have bonded with the bone, the implant dentist will place specially crafted prosthetic teeth on the root portion of the implant. These biting and chewing surfaces will remain stationary while you eat, talk, or chew. If they are well cared for, your implants will last many years. They also will not need to be refitted periodically as dentures do.
