Gum Disease: Am I Still a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Posted on 12/20/2010 by Dr. Franco
Gum disease close up in Irving,TXThere are several criteria that make an individual a better candidate for dental implants. Among these criteria are good overall health, as well as good overall oral health. The best candidates for dental implants are those not currently suffering from problems with the mouth, and this includes gum disease.

However, many patients who wish to pursue dental implants have lost their teeth due to gum disease. So does a past history of gum disease mean you are not a good candidate for dental implants? What if gum disease continues to be a problem?

The best way to find out if you are a good candidate for dental implants is to consult with an implant dentist. A dentist who specializes in dental implant procedures can evaluate your current condition to determine if dental implants are right for you.

Some factors your dentist might consider include:

•  Do you smoke?
•  Are you in overall good health?
•  Have you suffered bone loss in your jaw?
•  Do you have other medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure?

If you have suffered from gum disease in the past, this will not necessarily affect your candidacy for dental implants. In fact, many people who choose to have dental implants do so because they have lost teeth due to periodontal problems. Overall, these implant procedures carry a success rate similar to the success rate of implant procedures used to replace teeth lost due to other causes such as injury or decay.

If you have ongoing periodontal problems, however, or are diagnosed with gum disease during your dental implant evaluation, this might present an additional challenge. Gum disease is essentially an inflammation or infection in the gums. If you have ongoing periodontal disease, your dentist might recommend that you receive treatment for your gum disease before having dental implants.
