|Denture wearers often face the problem of dentures that have become loose and uncomfortable. Loose dentures are more than just a cosmetic problem. Dentures that are not secure in the mouth can cause sore spots and abrasions on the gums where they rub. This often occurs because tissues in the mouth have changed shape, often contracting, and because the structure of the bone beneath the gums has changed.
When dentures become loose, there are two basic options. One is to have your dentures remade so that they fit the changed contours of your mouth. The other is to replace the dentures with permanent dental implants.
Most people who wear dentures must have new dentures made at some point, either because the dentures no longer fit properly or because a tooth has become chipped or broken. This is particularly true if you are fitted with “immediate dentures,” which are placed in the mouth immediately after initial tooth extraction. Immediate dentures allow you to leave the dental office with usable dentures, but because your mouth has not yet fully healed, these dentures often must be replaced after a period of time.
New dentures are custom-made to fit the new contours of your mouth, so that you will no longer have to tolerate the discomfort of loose, shifting, irritating dentures.
Dental implants offer a permanent alternative to dentures. Implants are placed directly into the jawbone, and function just like your natural teeth. They do not have to be removed to be cleaned, and are custom made of special materials that are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth. They also help prevent loss of bone in the jaw by stimulating the bone when you chew. The process of placing dental implants can be involved, but in the long term you have strong, permanent teeth to replace those you have lost.
A consultation with a dentist specializing in dentures in Irving, TX can help you determine whether new dentures or dental implants are the best option to replace your loose, uncomfortable dentures.
