Will dental implants affect the natural, adjacent teeth?

Posted on 10/19/2010 by Dr. Franco
Diagram of dental implant and normal tooth in Irving,TXDental implants are the closest to natural teeth when it comes to options for replacing missing teeth. Being integrated with jawbone, much like natural tooth roots, implants serve to support natural looking, functionally efficient prostheses. People often wonder if this entire procedure will adversely affect the neighboring healthy teeth.

Placement of implants involves carefully planned surgical drilling within the jawbone, using very precise instruments and a specialized drill sequence to create a ‘socket’ that can receive the implant, so that this ‘socket’ created is in a precisely planned position, and is of exactly the same dimensions as the size of the implant, to ensure its perfect fit.

Even when multiple implants are needed, their placement is very precise, often utilizing high-end computer generated surgical guides that are based on jaw-CT scan images. The healthy bone supporting the teeth of adjacent teeth is maintained as such, and is unaffected by the implant placement.

When teeth are lost, the supporting bone is lost slowly. As a result, the remaining teeth have to bear the brunt of chewing forces, which often causes increased wear of the teeth, supporting bone, and contributes to jaw-joint disorders. Replacements like removable dentures, or even fixed bridges, cannot halt this loss of jawbone volume.

A major advantage of dental implants is that like natural tooth roots, they stimulate the jawbone and prevent its loss greatly. Thus, choosing dental implants over missing teeth or other options could mean; better chewing force distribution - causing more healthy bone levels, less tooth wear or jaw-joint problems in the long run.

Another common concern is that infected implants might damage adjacent teeth. Dental implant surgery is performed following strict infection control, and in most healthy individuals the chances of an immediate or delayed post-operative infection are miniscule. Just like natural teeth, dental implants require regular hygiene, and maintenance visits to keep the tissue around the implants healthy. Implants are a documented success today; so if you’re considering dental implants in Irving, TX, visit our implant dentist for a personal consultation.
