Implants are small posts that are typically made of titanium, which is inserted directly into your jaw-bone. These implants benefit the patients since the metal fuses directly and completely to their jaw. However, for some, this is unrealistic. Because there are some obstacles we can face with traditional vertical implants, we can also utilize implants called zygomatic implants, which eliminate some of the possible obstacles we can face when attempting to install standard implants. Here at BiteLock, under the direction and care of Dr. Pedro Franco, we can confidently install this type of implant with years of experience under our belts. If you are curious if this implant can help you call today to find out. What is a Zygomatic Implant? When it comes to implants, one of the first things that we have to look at in our patients is their bone density. If a patient has a low bone density for whatever reason (this could be from illness, missing teeth, or gum disease), often they would have to undergo a procedure called a bone graft. This can add months to the process since we must wait for the bone to heal. This estimate also assumes everything goes off without a hitch. Without a bone graft, though, a patient may not be able to get a standard implant because their jaws will not be strong enough and may reject the implant. However, there are alternatives to this practice. A zygomatic implant is a way around this process. This type of implant is much longer than its traditional counterpart. It is installed surgically into your upper jaw close to the zygoma bone (hence its name), rather than into your jaw. This allows us to bypass the bone density requirement while still giving your implant a very sturdy base. Does it Hurt?Ordinarily, when you have a highly degraded bone, you would have to undergo a grafting surgery to replenish the area, wait for that to heal (up to six months), then go back in for more surgery in the same place. While the pain or discomfort after those surgeries is manageable with medications, it is still present. With zygomatic implants, you are bypassing a potentially painful surgery altogether. Then when it comes to the implant surgery itself, the pain you feel afterward is significantly less than you would have with traditional implants. These implants are also perfect for immediate false tooth placement, such as we do with BiteLock same-day teeth. This process is not as invasive as a bone graft, and since it is much faster, it means much less pain. These restore the strength and aesthetic to your smile instantly. It takes a level of experience and expertise that not everyone can boast having. Dr. Pedro Franco has that knowledge, and our team is more than capable of providing you with the utmost comfort and security in your procedure. These are a brilliant alternative, and unfortunately are not widely known about. If you have been turned away due to excessive bone loss, know that there are other options to get you smiling once again! Give us a call today to find out more about zygomatic implants and what we can do for you! |
