Traditional ImplantsTraditional implants are the most commonly used implants. These are small posts made of titanium or zirconium that we can surgically install directly into your jawbone to replace missing teeth. These implants act as the false tooth’s root and keep your jaw happy and healthy over time. However, they do have one possible flaw. Over time, living with tooth loss or partial/full dentures can lead to bone loss. This is simply because there is nothing in the area consistently stimulating the jawbone in the empty gap. This means that coming in to get an implant done can be a particularly lengthy process as we may need to rebuild this bone for it to be strong enough to support a foreign body. A bone graft, which is the only solution to rebuild bone, can add four to six months on to your procedure since it needs to fuse entirely before it is strong enough. Even then, not everyone can undergo a bone graft, particularly if their bone loss is just too much. Zygomatic Implants are DifferentIn many ways, a zygomatic implant is much the same as a traditional implant. In essence, it does the same job. By the time both procedures are done, your mouth will be ready for new teeth. This can mean crowns, bridges, or entire sets of dentures (such as our BiteLock permanent denture system). However, there are several differences. For one, these implants do not go into your jaw in the same way that a traditional one does. These go into your zygoma bone, or your cheekbone, at an angle rather than vertically. This bone offers a density that is strong enough to support the implants without diminishing since they are not affected by missing teeth. Because of this, these implants are much longer and stronger. These implants are also available to a much wider range of people. This procedure completely bypasses the need to have a bone graft! This means that those people with even the most severe cases of bone loss may still be candidates to have new teeth and a brilliant smile once again. There are also time and health benefits since this significantly cuts down on how long it takes to get implants (by months if you would have otherwise needed a bone graft) and means that it is far less painful.
