What Are Dental Implants?

Posted on 11/1/2017 by Dr. Franco
Here at BiteLock, we know that there is much general uncertainty when it comes to dental implants. Many of our patients come to us with limited knowledge or experience with the concept. However, since our advanced denture system utilizes these replacement appliances, we find it essential to increase the public’s awareness on all aspects of the practice, from what they are and how they can be used to the installation process itself. We would be more than happy to answer any potential questions you may have about your upcoming procedure, so be sure to direct any inquiries our way.

What is a Dental Implant?

When you have missing teeth, it is integral to your oral health that you repair this issue as soon as humanly possible. One of the most commonly utilized procedures is the use of dental implants. This procedure involves the surgical installation of a small titanium post into the socket left behind by a missing tooth.

These posts come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so there is sure to be one that will fit your particular needs. This post acts in much the same way that the root of a natural tooth would, but instead supports some different oral appliances, from crowns and bridges to full sets of dentures.

These are permanent options that fuse completely with your jaw so that it keeps growing rather than diminishing as it may with removable options. Our BiteLock system allows you to use a limited number of implants to support a full new set of permanent teeth.

The Dental Implant Procedure

When you come in for your new teeth, there are a couple of steps that we take first. We do scans to ensure that you have the proper bone density and shape to uphold these implants first. Then, we take steps to repair any issues we see before we proceed with the procedure. For example, should we find that you have a low bone density in your jaw, you may have issues supporting the implants and could cause more problems than you fix. However, there are ways to repair this obstacle.

We often use a bone grafting surgery to replenish the structure and growth of the bone in the area so that it is strong enough to support your implants safely and comfortably, along with other procedures you may eventually need. Once you heal from this procedure, you are set to get your implants. During this process, we will give you a local (or general if you prefer) anesthetic. You will not feel a thing. Then, we will make an incision in the top of your gum-line, where we can then access your jaw bone. We will then insert and seal in your implant. From there, you will begin the healing process.

If you are utilizing our BiteLock system, you will be given your brand-new teeth same day! Other processes may give you temporary false teeth to cover the implant until your new teeth are ready, requiring a second appointment.

There are a lot of different uses and benefits of dental implants. Dr. Pedro Franco would like to help you search every avenue to find the solution that is best for you and your needs. For more information, simply give us a call today, and our experienced and friendly staff can help you every step of the way.
