Gum Supported Overdenture

Posted on 11/1/2017 by Dr. Franco
There are a wide variety of overdentures available to patients today, and Dr. Pedro Franco here at BiteLock can help you to find the best possible solution for your oral health needs. This decision can come based on several factors, from cosmetic decisions to the state of the bones in your jaw. Our team can work with you to find which denture system is the perfect fit. One of these options is an implant retained, gum supported structure. These are a great option for those who are desiring a bit more stability than they are getting with their standard dentures.

What is an Implant-Retained Gum Supported Overdenture?

Overdentures come in a wide range of fabrications, and one of these is implant retained but gum supported. This means that the denture is attached to two implants in the front of your mouth, but for the most part, is supported by the gum tissue in the back. These dentures are still removable, which is very convenient but are locked in place during use. For many of our patients, traditional dentures just do not do the trick. They are uncomfortable, they move a lot, and they can cause bone loss. These drawbacks can be reversed with an implant retained and gum supported option.

Benefits to This System

This style of denture is a great option and is often chosen by those who have been using traditional dentures for a while and needed a bit of a boost. First of all, traditional dentures slip and slide with use. Even with adhesive, they can still be embarrassing as they can fall out, or slide backward toward your throat and causing you to gag. This system eliminates that option. The implants snap into place when you put them in, meaning that they have a little give and may still move a little, but they will not fall out unless you take them out yourself. They are very sturdy because of this locking mechanism as well. They are supported by your gums, giving you the freedom to chew with much the same effectiveness as regular teeth.

Because they can be taken out when needed, they are easier to clean and care for over time, giving them a longer life than you could get with standard dentures as well. These do not cause the same pain over time that many of our patients have come to expect because they do not move nearly as much. They are also much more affordable because we have combined the use of a small number of implants with our dentures. The implants also combat bone loss, which can lead to further damage and problems over time.
