Overdeture Care

Posted on 11/1/2017 by Dr. Franco
When it comes to taking care of your implant supported dentures, like our state-of-the-art BiteLock denture system, it is essential that you know what you are doing. If you are unsure or do it wrong, you may find that your dentures do not give you the life that you were hoping to achieve when you got them. Here at BiteLock, we understand that it is important that you take just as great of care of your dental overture as you do with natural teeth, if not more so. We are here to answer any potential questions you may have about our system and aftercare as well.

What is a Dental Overture?

Many of our patients find that they are missing many or all of their teeth. This can come from a multitude of reasons. Many patients have been using removable dentures, so they have had their teeth removed, some have lost teeth due to age or illness (such as leukemia), and some have so many dental problems, the best solution for the long-term is extraction and replacement. In cases like these, there are a lot of different options. One of these is a dental overture, or an implant based denture system, like BiteLock. These are permanent dentures that sit solidly and securely in your jaw that provide you with the comfortability and health benefits of natural teeth. Implants are surgically installed and fused with your jaw, and the dentures are secured in place above the surface, granting you as close to real teeth as you can get.

Cleaning Your Dental Overture

When you hear about traditional dentures, you have undoubtedly heard that you have to take them out to clean them. This involves some brushing and extended soaks. This is not only for the benefit of your dentures but also for your gums and jaw, as they can become irritated and sore over time. However, with permanent dentures, you do not have to undergo this same tedious process.

Your permanent dentures have the ability to be brushed and flossed in much the same way as your natural teeth. In fact, not doing so can lead to much worse problems, such as gum disease which can eventually lead to the rejection of your implants. You may not be able to use the same brush or posts that you have used with your natural teeth, as these can be abrasive and damaging to the material that your dentures are composed of. However, brushing and cleaning your dentures is still simple and quick, but also incredibly necessary.

If you are unsure which brushes, paste or flosses to use, or when to use them, give Dr. Pedro Franco a call today, and he can help you to create a fantastic oral hygiene routine. Knowing what you need to be doing and when is essential in creating an environment in your mouth that is toxic for bacteria but perfect for your health. With any questions or concerns about caring for your overture, our kind and knowledgeable staff would be more than happy to take your call and give you advice.
