![]() We know mouthwash is important for a healthy mouth. You know it is important, too. Ideally, you should be rinsing your mouth with mouthwash after each brushing. However, should you be using just any kind of mouthwash? Of course not!
Your Mouth Will Thank You! Most clinical mouthwashes, or mouthwashes made to fight bacteria and prevent tooth decay and gingivitis, contain ethanol, a type of alcohol. Mouthwashes that contain alcohol do fight bacteria effectively, but they do have some drawbacks. For one thing, many people experience a burning sensation when using alcohol based mouthwashes. Ever felt like screaming while or after you use this kind of mouthwash? Of course you have! It stings, and it stings because the ethanol, an alcohol, may irritate the lining in your mouth and your gums. This is definitely no fun! Another very important reason to switch to alcohol free mouthwash is dry mouth, a condition most people do not even consider, but one that is quite common. While alcohol does help get rid of bacteria, it also creates dry mouth, leading to xerostomia. Xerostomia is a condition wherein your salivary glands do not produce enough saliva to coat the mucus membranes in your mouth. Less saliva in your mouth means leads to tooth decay, which is exactly what we do not want for you. Switching to an alcohol free mouthwash with fluoride is the best solution. Fluoride is paramount for healthy teeth, as it re-mineralizes your teeth, protecting them from decay caused by sugars and plaque that bacteria love. It also helps reverse early signs of tooth decay. The lack of alcohol also means that more people, including people with sensitive mouths and children, can use it.
