Cleft Palate BiteLock TX 75062-5650Parents of children born with cleft palate and other facial deformities have overwhelming challenges. While it's known that facial deformities like cleft palate and cleft lip occur before birth, the reason they occur isn't known.

Children having cleft palate are more likely to have ear infections because the deformation interferes with the middle ear function.

Early Treatment

Children who have a cleft palate need to get early treatment to help restore a normal appearance, this is particularly important before the children begin peer interaction. Having early treatment helps minimize the social discomfort that may occur in a child born with these facial deformities.

As the child grows, they begin to understand themselves and their look. If they have a cleft palate, it may be very difficult for them to socialize with others. Again, children who have this disorder may have other problems like hearing and speech difficulties.

Cleft Palate Repair

Treatment of cleft palate may vary depending on the nature of the abnormality. The repair is aimed at helping the child have normal speech and restoring the function of the Eustachian tube.

In some children, the abnormality may involve a small portion within the back of the mouth's roof. In others, there is complete separation extending from back to front.

Cleft palate may be seen on one side or both sides of a child's upper mouth. Soft palate repair may be done during the time of repairing the lip, in case it is involved. Usually, this is best done at 3 months.

On the other hand, hard palate repair may be done after the baby is older when the teeth have erupted. The reason is to avoid causing disturbance to the growth of the maxilla and teeth.

Your child may be having cleft palate and you are not sure of the treatment options available or when to seek for treatment. We can help you find out the best way to repair the cleft palate, so just call us.
