Why You May Have Bony Growths Showing Up in Your Mouth?

Posted on 7/20/2018 by Dr. Franco
Why You May Have Bony Growths Showing Up in Your Mouth? It is surprising to many to find out that bony growths in the mouth are normal. They are called exostosis or tori. The bone growths are benign, but they can cause pain or discomfort.

The treatment for them is removal by an oral surgeon. It is not a complicated procedure and it does resolve the problem, but it does not tell people why they have these things. They want to know the causes of these bony growths and if there is anything they can to prevent them.

How Bony Growths Form

These are a result of air bubbles caught in the temporal mandibular joint. This is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull and is found on both sides of the jaw. The growths can be on either the inside or the outside of the mouth between the cheeks and gums. As long as they are on both sides of the mouth, they are not thought of as dangerous.

This is not the only reason that you may have bone growth, but it is one of the most common. There is no need to have these bony growths removed unless they bother you. There are some other types of bone growth that require more attention. The key symptom that shows the bone growth needs addressing is the presence of pain.

Other Types of Bone Growth

Bone growth could also mean that the wisdom teeth are emerging. Some associate the blood clots that form from a wisdom tooth extraction as bone growth. A dental professional can help with both of these issues. Another bone growth is an abscess bone growth. The infraction can lead to a pocket of pus and blood that feels like a bone growth. Cysts, gum recession and calcium deposits may seem like bone growth as well.

There are ways to deal with bone growth. If you have any pain that comes from bone growth or if you are concerned about any bony growths, do not wait to contact our dental professionals. We can help you determine what the problem is and what the possible treatments are. Call our office today to get more information.
