Many people at some point in their lives have experienced a clicking jaw. At the very least, some have just heard strange noises every time they open their mouth. There is a whole range of different causes for this, and some of them are nothing to worry about. However, it is still a good idea to consider speaking to an oral surgeon. Clicking usually occurs after a person opens their mouth beyond a certain point. This can sometimes be painful as well. What Causes a Clicking Jaw?There could be many reasons why your jaw clicks. Most of the time this is referred to as "temporomandibular joint disorder" (or "TMS disorder" for short). Generally speaking, there are four basic problems. These include muscular disorders which are usually considered to be related to stress. In extreme circumstances, they can be very painful and may even hinder a person from eating. Another cause could be a cartilage disorder where the disk is partially displaced and can also be painful. General facial pain can also be a cause, as well as conditions such as arthritis. Speaking to an Oral SurgeonPatients usually tend to come to us when they notice that something is really wrong or when they are particularly worried. With a clicking jaw, intense pain often means seeing an oral surgeon in order to determine the root cause of the problem. Speaking to an oral surgeon can also help to give you peace of mind if you happen to be worried about the issues you're having. If you feel that you are still unsure about what you can do for your clicking jaw, it is a good idea to come to us immediately. We are more than happy to investigate and see what can be done. |
